The Hampden County Legal Clinic (HCLC) is a public service of the Hampden County Bar Association. The Hampden County Legal Clinic is a legal aid program which facilitates access to justice for residents with low or no income in the Greater Springfield area. If you have an issue regarding a landlord/tenant, civil district court or probate and family matter, you can contact the Hampden County Legal Clinic. The Hampden County Bar Association’s Legal Clinic is sponsored by MassMutual Financial Group and works in conjunction with the Western New England College School of Law’s Housing Clinic, Women’s Bar Foundation, MassMutual Corporate Law Department and Community Legal Aid.
Housing Court Lawyer for a Day provides income-eligible landlords and tenants with free legal assistance in Housing Court on the Thursday the case is scheduled, which is Summary Process/Eviction day. The Lawyer for the Day may advocate for the clients through mediation with a court specialist, assist litigants with court forms, and litigate before the Judge if necessary. To inquire if volunteers are available, you can report to the resource room on the second floor of Western Division Housing Court on the Thursday your case is scheduled. Monday Landlord/Tenant Clinic provides pro se landlords/tenants an opportunity to get legal advice and assistance with forms for matters involving housing issues. There is no court representation associated with this program and volunteers are here in an advisory capacity only. The clinic operates one Monday per month, depending on volunteer availability. District Court Lawyer for a Day provides assistance to litigants with civil District Court cases by providing guidance and advice, locating self-help resources and identifying the issues they may be facing. The program operates on Wednesdays from 1-4 and Thursdays from 9-4 in the Hampden County Hall of Justice, depending on volunteer availability. There is no court representation associated with this program and volunteers are here in an advisory capacity only. The types of issues covered in this program are small claims, supplementary process, summary process/eviction, civil motor vehicle infraction, civil harassment, criminal/application for show cause and all other general civil questions. Volunteers do problem-solving, guide the consumers with forms and provide legal advice on civil issues. To inquire as to when the volunteers are available, you can contact the HCLC.
Probate Court Lawyer for a Day provides limited legal advice and assistance with forms primarily related to divorce and child custody and support matters. Volunteers are scheduled based on their availability. To inquire as to when the volunteers are available, you can contact the HCLC.
