*Sustaining Members over two consecutive years

If you were unable to attend the Holiday Party or we did not get the chance to talk then, I want to start by wishing you a safe and joyful holiday season on behalf of myself, Noreen, all of our dedicated staff and the entire Board of Directors. I personally would like to thank all of you that attended, especially our many honored guests from the Committee for Public Counsel Services, Community Legal Aid, the Hampden County District Attorney Mark G. Mastroianni and his Office as well as the Board members and attorneys from the Hampden County Lawyers for Justice, Inc. who made this a very memorable event. I have no doubt that we will move to an even larger venue next year. If you are not already a member, please consider joining, as we would love to have each and every one of you at Judge’s Night, the Annual Dinner, the Golf Tournament or any number of community outreach, education or social programs offered by the Bar Association throughout the balance of this year. We can offer incentives for any new member that wants to join mid-year at a discounted rate, so please talk to Noreen or anyone on the Board for more information.

This continues to be a very exciting year for the Bar Association. I want to use this address to highlight the new Practice Development Series that was recently launched, which will include informal education and information meetings, use of social networking and outreach to small firm members. The mission of this new committee is to support lawyers, particularly new practitioners, solo practitioners, and members of small firms to improve professional skills, increase collegiality and decrease the business of liability, ethical and health risks of practice.

Events are presently scheduled as follows:

December 10 Are You making money?
January 14 Setting Up an Office
February 11 Getting help preparing for your first trial
March 11 Dealing with difficult Adversaries
April 8 Business Development, Networking & Marketing

We will need seasoned practitioners to step forward to assist with crafting and leading these presentations as well as simply to attend to join in the discussion. Everyone has developed their own time-honored method of meeting each of these challenges, and it is important to get as many opinions as possible. We will all benefit from a larger and more diverse knowledge base. After each event, we will also need your honest feedback from everyone involved to refine this program. This is not a short term problem, so we cannot remedy it with a short term solution. The need is great in scope and indefinite in time. It will take the work of many of us to make this a success. As such, I ask that you encourage as many people as possible to attend and consider making your own participation in one or more parts of this series a real priority. The challenges faced by literally years of unemployed or underemployed law school graduates, as well as new and solo practitioners are great, and meeting the Committee’s mission will greatly benefit us as individuals, with the public and as a greater legal community.

The Hampden County Bar Association would like to welcome the following attorneys and students as new members:

Pouyan Afshar - Student
Samuel Medina, Esq.
Shanna R. Reed, Esq. - City of Westfield
Emily G. Shallcross, Esq.-Committee for Public Counsel Service

Betsy Stevens, Esq.
