As we move into Spring, I am saddened to report the loss of Jack Donahue who recently passed and left, among others, his Wife, best friend, and our colleague, Judy Cross. Jack was one of a kind … bright, hilarious, a loyal friend …. a devotee of golf and the Springfield Country club. He will be remembered as a fierce advocate and one who was always indefatigable in the vindication of his client’s cause. For those who knew him, he will be remembered as a truly compleat and wonderful man. We will miss him.

This past month was another busy one for the Bar Association. For example, consider the following:

1. The Lawyer Referral Information Service (LRIS) has been evaluating our marketing and advertising strategies to focus on areas which would optimize the most referrals. To that end, we are increasing our internet presence and reducing yellow page advertising. The LRIS committee.....

Overall, January proved to be a “red letter” month. Christina Turgeon’s hard work, at the direction of the Board of Directors, obtained for us a $15,000 grant from Mass Mutual to fund our legal clinic. This is obviously welcome news for our association and its endeavors to serve members of the public. Mass Mutual, too, through Dorothy Varon’s leadership....

In December, 2011, members of the Board of Directors were fortunate to spend a day with Elizabeth Derrico, who is an associate director of the American Bar Association’s Division for Bar Services. November was a busy month for our Association. Here’s a sampling:

1. The Consumer Legal Clinic which up to this point had been operating out of State Street is now in the process of moving its facility into the Bar Association office. The grant money for the project dried up and, because of its importance to both the Association and the community it serves, the Board agreed to underwrite its net costs for a period of six months...
